Swallowtail butterflies are large, colorful butterflies in the family Papilionidae, and include over 550 species. Though the majority are tropical, members of the family inhabit every continent except Antarctica. They are named for theelongated tails on their hindwings, which resemble the tail of a swallow. However, not all swallowtails have these tails, and some have very short tails or none at all.
